Sons of Barley Brings Community-First Brewing to Woodbury Heights, NJ
Woodbury Heights has a brand-new destination for craft beer lovers—and it’s been a long time coming. Sons of Barley, located on the Mantua Pike just across the side street from the former eSporta Fitness Center, officially opens its doors after five years of planning, perseverance, and passion from owner and brewer Scott. The brewery occupies the front portion of a building across from Heights Liquor Store, a highly visible spot that commuters and locals alike won’t miss.
Five Years in the Making
Sons of Barley’s story began back in 2021, when the Courier Post first covered the project as it navigated the local Planning Board process. Since then, the South Jersey beer community has watched with anticipation as Scott worked steadily toward bringing the brewery to life. That anticipation comes with a responsibility Scott takes seriously—he wants every guest’s experience to be outstanding, with plenty of fresh beer ready to pour from day one.
“We Brew Beer”—Simple, Drinkable, and Done Right
While Sons of Barley plans to offer a full lineup across the brewing spectrum—pale ales, IPAs, stouts, and more—the philosophy behind the beer is refreshingly straightforward: make everything drinkable. Scott’s emphasis isn’t on chasing hype styles or extremes, but on crafting balanced, approachable beers that customers will want to order again and again.
The brewery expects to feature 12 taps, one of which will pour a hard seltzer base that guests can customize with a variety of flavors. It’s a thoughtful touch that widens the appeal beyond beer purists.
A Bright, Welcoming Tasting Room
The build-out of the space is impressive. What began as an empty shell is now a roughly 2,000-square-foot tasting room filled with natural light, thanks to the large windows lining all three exterior walls. A long bar—seating at least 14—anchors the room, while additional seating brings capacity to around 60 guests without ever feeling cramped.
The atmosphere is tailored for comfort and community. Several TVs dot the space, perfect for catching games (the Eagles Super Bowl banner makes it clear where local loyalties lie). The layout also leaves room for small acoustic performances in the future, adding to the brewery’s gathering-place vibe.
Soft Opening Visit: Friendly Faces & Promising Pours
During our visit for their soft opening, Sons of Barley had five beers on tap, with many more slated to arrive soon. But what stood out above everything else wasn’t the beer list or the décor—it was the people.
The staff, including Scott himself, welcomed guests with genuine warmth. Throughout our time there, multiple team members stopped by to thank us for coming out and supporting them as they find their footing in the brewing world. Their appreciation for the community was unmistakable and deeply authentic.
A Brewery Built for Locals—And Ready for What’s Next
With its prime location, thoughtfully designed tasting room, and a clear commitment to crafting high-quality, drinkable beer, Sons of Barley is setting itself up to become a new hub for Woodbury Heights. More than just a place to grab a pint, Scott’s vision is to create a home base for beer lovers, neighbors, and anyone who enjoys good company with their glass.
As more beers roll out and word spreads, Sons of Barley is poised to become one of South Jersey’s most talked-about new breweries—proof that five years of steady dedication can yield something truly worth raising a glass to.
